Don’t Forget the Lyrics!

Not only does paying attention to the lyrics help you if you happen to be on a music trivia television show, but it is also important when planning your wedding songs for your ceremony and reception.

There are so many decisions in planning a wedding, and who knew there were so many songs that needed to be planned out? At the ceremony alone there is the prelude, processional, bride entrance, interlude, recessional, and postlude songs. And then there’s the reception which has the first dance, mother-son, father-daughter, anniversary dance, cake cutting, garter toss, bouquet toss, and last dance songs. Whew!

In choosing a song that will be played at your wedding, the lyrics are usually one of the most influential reasons as to why some songs are picked over others.

Here’s a list of the current top first dance songs and their lyrics:

“A Thousand Years” By Christina Perri

Heart beats fast, Colors and promises, How to be brave, How can I love when I’m afraid To fall, But watching you stand alone, All of my doubt, Suddenly goes away somehow, One step closer, [Chorus:] I have died everyday waiting for you, Darlin’ don’t be afraid, I have loved you for a Thousand years, I’ll love you for a Thousand more. Time stands still, beauty in all she Is, I will be brave, I will not let anything Take away, What’s standing in front of me, Every breath, Every hour has come to this, One step closer. [Chorus:] I have died everyday Waiting for you, Darlin’ don’t be afraid, I have loved you for a Thousand years, I’ll love you for a Thousand more. And all along I believed I would find you, Time has brought Your heart to me, I have loved you for a Thousand years, I’ll love you for a Thousand more, One step closer, One step closer. [Chorus:] I have died everyday Waiting for you, Darlin’ don’t be afraid, I have loved you for a Thousand years, I’ll love you for a Thousand more, And all along I believed I would find you, Time has brought Your heart to me, I have loved you for a Thousand years, I’ll love you for a Thousand more.

“Everything” By Michael Buble

You’re a falling star, You’re the get away car. You’re the line in the sand when I go too far. You’re the swimming pool, on an August day. And you’re the perfect thing to say. And you play it coy, But it’s kinda cute. Ah, When you smile at me you know exactly what you do. Baby don’t pretend, that you don’t know it’s true. Cause you can see it when I look at you. [Chorus:] And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times. It’s you, it’s you, You make me sing. You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything. You’re a carousel, you’re a wishing well, And you light me up, when you ring my bell. You’re a mystery, you’re from outer space, You’re every minute of my everyday. And I can’t believe, uh that I’m your man! And I get to kiss you baby just because I can. Whatever comes our way, ah we’ll see it through, And you know that’s what our love can do. [Chorus:] And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times, It’s you, it’s you, You make me sing, You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything. So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La. So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La. [Chorus:] And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times. It’s you, it’s you, You make me sing. You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything. You’re every song, and I sing along. ‘Cause you’re my everything. Yeah, yeah. So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La. So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La.

“Then” By Brad Paisley

I remember trying not to stare The night that I first met you. You had me mesmerized And three weeks later In the front porch light, Taking 45 minutes to kiss goodnight I hadn’t told you yet, I thought I loved you then. [Chorus:] Now you’re my whole life, Now you’re my whole world, I just can’t believe, The way I feel about you girl. Like a river meets the sea, Stronger than its ever been, We’ve come so far since that day, And I thought I loved you then. I remember taking you back To right where I first met you. You were so surprised. There were people around But I didn’t care. I got down on one knee right there. And once again I thought I loved you then. [Chorus:] Now you’re my whole life, Now you’re my whole world, I just can’t believe The way I feel about you girl. Like a river meets the sea. Stronger than its ever been. We’ve come so far since that day, And I thought I loved you then. I can just see you With a baby on the way. I can just see you When your hair is turning grey. What I can’t see Is how I’m ever gonna love you more But I’ve said that before. Now you’re my whole life, Now you’re my whole world. I just can’t believe The way I feel about you girl. We’ll look back someday At this moment that we’re in And I’ll look at you and say. And I thought I loved you then And I thought I loved you then.

“Marry Me” By Train

Forever can never be long enough for me, To feel like I’ve had long enough with you, Forget the world now, we won’t let them see, But there’s one thing left to do. Now that the weight has lifted, Love has surely shifted my way. Marry me. Today and every day. Marry me. If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this café. Say you will. Say you will. Together can never be close enough for me. To feel like I am close enough to you. You wear white and I’ll wear out the words I love you. And you’re beautiful. Now that the wait is over. And love and has finally showed her my way. Marry me. Today and every day. Marry me. If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this café. Say you will. Say you will. Promise me you’ll always be. Happy by my side. I promise to sing to you When all the music dies. And marry me. Today and everyday. Marry me. If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this café. Say you will. Say you will. Marry me

Music can make or break a wedding reception. If the music doesn’t make people want to get up and dance, they’re not going to. So keep it upbeat and lively with a couple slow love songs in the mix.

And most importantly, don’t forget to check the lyrics before choosing your songs! You don’t want to have an unexpected curse word or the DJ to play a song only to find out it’s about a break-up instead of two people in love.

  2. Very true! Some people choose a tune because they like the feel of the music, but if people listen to the words it might not be wise to not have songs about how you keep breaking up, you’ve cheated me, etc…
One wedding I performed the bride requested I sing and play for the processional, ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
“Is your future husband (a handsome man, actually) OK with that”? I asked. “Oh yes”, she said. But apparently he was not!
